Dispensaries
Fifty dispensaries in Maps. Reviews decide who gets the visit.
Cannabis retail is the most crowded shelf in Calgary. When a shopper searches, they get a wall of green pins and pick by rating and review count. A tap at the counter is the quiet edge that keeps your listing on top of the stack.
Why this keeps happening.
The Maps list is a knife fight.
Search "dispensary near me" in most Calgary neighbourhoods and you get a dozen shops within a few blocks. Shoppers do not comparison-drive — they tap the first two or three pins with the strongest ratings and most reviews. Everyone below that line is invisible.
You can't buy your way to the top.
Ad rules for cannabis are strict, so the usual "just run more ads" lever is mostly off the table. That makes organic Maps ranking disproportionately valuable — and reviews are one of the few signals you can actually influence honestly.
The rapport is there; the review isn't.
Your budtenders build real trust — walking a regular through strains, remembering their last pickup. That relationship is exactly what makes people happy to leave a review. But nobody asks at the counter, so all that goodwill never reaches your listing.
Where it lives
Put a tap where the moment happens.
- Coin on the POS counter
- Sticker by the exit door
- Stand at the pickup counter
- At the age-check desk
In practice
The natural tap at checkout.
Regular comes in, budtender talks them through what's fresh, rings them up. Bag handed over, ID back in the wallet, and the budtender nods at the coin on the counter: "If we treated you right, one tap here helps a ton." Phone touches the coin, your Google review page opens, and they leave a line about the service and the recommendation. They are describing their experience — not the product — so the ask stays clean, and it lands in the exact moment the rapport is strongest.

Questions
The things you’re probably wondering.
Is asking for Google reviews even allowed for cannabis retail?
Yes. Asking a customer to review their experience is different from advertising a product. Your reviewers describe the service, the shop and the staff — not specific cannabis products — so a simple "if we did right by you, leave a review" ask stays on the right side of the line. Keep the ask about the visit, never offer anything in exchange, and you're fine.
Will it work through a customer's phone case?
For almost everyone, yes. NFC reads through typical plastic, silicone and leather cases. It only struggles with thick metal cases or built-in metal wallet plates — rare, and those folks can still tap by holding the phone flat against the coin.
Cannabis retail has high staff turnover. Is there retraining every time?
No. The coin is passive hardware programmed to your review page — it does not depend on any one budtender. When someone new starts, the whole "training" is one sentence: nod at the coin and say it helps. Nothing to reconfigure, nothing to reinstall.
